Kinja'd!!!

We decided that it was high time to address our north facing wall. This is actually our sons bedroom. We knew it had gaps in the weatherboards but this is a bit ridiculous.

That pile of kindling inside our wall is an old rat’s nest... complete with very old rat. And a half a pound of steel wool. The previous owner used the steel wool as a gap sealer...I will leave the ludicrousness of that for others to consider. Suffice to say that if we had been subjected to an ember attack during the recent bushfire...we’d have been beyond toasty.

At least I know I have things to do this week!

I think steel wool is an old time  rat deterrent for filling gaps so it’s not THAT crazy. But better to fix it properly.

Better  If you mix it with the caulking,

That room had to colder than a reception by my ex-in-laws! Lots of insulation time for a temporary fix, and best would be to Tyvek the  outside under the siding to seal and protect.

Don’t think cold is a problem down under.

Actually, cold is not the issue here. Frosts are rare, even in winter. At worst, we can expect temperatures down to -5 degrees centigrade and only for a few hours. It’s the heat that is the issue!

The plan is to a) fit a membrane like Tyvek to the existing stud wall; b) build another stud wall inside the existing one then fill it with insulation and line it; and C) remove the ironbark weatherboards, put more insulation into the existing stud wall, membrane over then cover with corrugated steel sheet. No more gaps!!

Yep...the house is at least 30 years old. The weatherboards are straight from the mill ironbark...so they were laid green and allowed to dry insitu. Unfortunately, they were top nailed only...which allowed quite some movement!

No...spray foam is for amateurs. Especially given it is not UV tolerant and the cheaper stuff that everybody uses is actually water absorbent.

Is it typical to not have any wall sheathing there?

In the older housing stock, especially pre 1980's ...very typical.

Even now with brick/veneer houses, it is not uncommon for the timber inner frame to be membrane wrapped then the bricky busts the membrane to fit the wall ties...then the plumber and sparky busts it up a little more doing what they do...and so much for that membrane.
